We spent two weeks last year in production on a new two part series on the Battle of the Atlantic for BBC Northern Ireland. The series will tell the story of this epic campaign, highlighting the role of Derry, a city at the forefront of the battle. At the end of the war, what was left of Hitler’s Uboat fleet surrendered in Derry, and was then scuttled off the coast of Donegal. Thought to be beyond reach and forgotten, this lost fleet has been rediscovered. Showcasing unique footage of the wrecks this ambitious new series reveals the truth behind the human cost of the Uboat campaign for both sides, a campaign the outcome of which would determine who won the Second World War.

How we won the war, was a 10-part series that followed on from the success of DIG 1940.

This ambitious series set out to reveal the stories of ordinary men and women who achieved extraordinary things, whilst living, working and fighting on the Home Front in Britain throughout the Second World War. Travelling the length and breadth of the UK, I searched deep into the heart of a nation at war, gathering untold stories of bravery and sacrifice from those that were actually there. Combining rare archive, moving and emotional first accounts from survivors, and a journey of discovery covering thousands of miles, I uncovered the wartime past that kept Britain in the fight at home and across the globe througout our darkest days. It is a journey that tells us much about ourselves as a country, when at a time of crisis, duty and determination paved the way toward final victory.

The series ran daily from Monday to Friday for two weeks and the summary below will give you a flavour of what we covered in the show.

I was delighted to present two films supporting the work of Rowcroft Hospice which serves the population of South Devon. I also attended the launch of the film at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth where I talked to the audience about the work of Rowcroft and then introduced the film, made by Blanchard Media. After the launch, I attended a dinner hosted by chairman Sue Newman at the Royal Castle Hotel in Dartmouth, I recalled my own days at Dartmouth attending a summer school taster for naval life.

Rowcroft provides specialist care to patients with progressive, life-limiting illnesses. To find out more and support their wonderful work see:

I now regularly contribute to this long running rural affairs series. Subjects I have covered range from exploring the effects of the drought, the discovery of six Bronze age boats under the Fens, and the challenges facing our urban wildlife. More recent forays include an exploration into the medieval history of the Yorkshire Dales, and a unique behind the scenes look at the Army’s state of the art Afghan Training village in Norfolk, which was pick of the day in many of the papers. Open Country is broadcast at selected periods throughout the year on BBC Radio 4 at 3pm Thursday afternoons, and again at 6am Saturday mornings. If you don’t fancy an early weekend start, and you missed it, always check the BBC iplayer!

The series is also avaliable as a podcast;

2013 sees me once again take to the road helping those keen to escape the hustle and bustle of city life find a new life in the country. Since joining the series in 2007, I have been lucky enough to reach growing audiences at home and abroad with this series, if the warm comments I receive when I’m out and about are anything to go by. I never stop learning about our beautiful countryside and the wonderful people who inhabit it.

This year’s new series is now being broadcast, on BBC One, at 3pm most weekday afternoons. You can also catch the show on the BBC iplayer, and at other selected times throughout the BBC Schedule. Please check the listings for the latest information.

Broadcast over Christmas 2011, my passion for military history saw me through as the winner of the specialist round with questions on the Battle for Arnhem, ‘Operation Market Garden’, against some very tough competition! I was finally beaten into second place by comedian Justin Moorhouse following the general knowledge round. Celebrity contestants are given a donation to pass on to a charity of their choice and I was delighted to support the ongoing work of the Ghurka Welfare Trust.

Sadly, he’s just been diagnosed with elbow dysplasia so we are having to take extra special care of him. Big thank you to Helen & Sally at Canine Hydrocare and all at Belmont Vets in Hereford for their support for him too.
